10 Well-Known Classical Songs That Used in Movies

Hi, in my first post now, I want to share about some of the popular classical music that we usually heard in some movies. I will also list what movies that used these songs. Here are those:

1. Beethoven's 5th Symphony, Op. 67


The first is Beethoven's 5th Symphony. This is one of the best-known of Beethoven's Symphony and one of the most frequently played symphonies. The characteristic of this song that made it interesting is its dramatic intro part. And because of that, people usually use its intro (Beethoven's 5th Symphony, Op. 67, 1st movement) for dramatic effect in the movies.

2. Beethoven's Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor, WoO 59, "Für Elise"



This is one of Beethoven's popular works, especially for solo piano. The song was published in 1867, but its original version is missing. So what we usually heard today is the earlier version of this song that was transcribed by Ludwig Nohl. In English, "Für Elise" means "For Elise." But in fact, it is not certain who the girl named "Elise" was. So even though this song has "Für Elise" nickname, but it may be not for "Elise." It could be Für Juliane or Für Therese or anyone. But some people believe it is "Für Therese."

3. Bizet's Carmen: L'amour est un oiseau rebelle, "Habanera"



This is one of Bizet's famous work for opera. Some Disney movies even used this song as their soundtrack. This song was adapted from the habanera "El Arreglito", originally composed by Sebastian Yradier. This is one of the classical songs that has lyrics, but people usually use its instrumental, for a movie as an example.

4. Strauss II's An der schonen, blauen Donau (The Beautiful Blue Danube), Op. 314


This is one of the most popular classical songs in the world. So many people use this song, especially for movies. This waltz was written by Johann Strauss II in 1866, and performed in 1867 for the first time. At its first performance, the song wasn't too successful. But after that, Strauss made some improvements of it. And then at the next concert, the song made a huge success.

5. Mozart's Serenade No. 13 in G major, K. 525, "Eine kleine Nachtmusik"




Eine kleine Nachtmusik is a chamber ensemble composition that created by Mozart. This is also a popular song. Many movies, also some advertisements, use this song. Although in English Eine kleine Nachtmusik literally means "A Little Night Music", but accurately it means "A Little Serenade." The reason why Mozart composed this song is not known, but it could be for commission only.

6. Bach's Overture (Suite) No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068



This song is one of Bach's Four Orchestral suites. This song is the best known of them, perhaps because of the fame of the second movement, the famous "Air on the G string." The word "Air" came from an English term "Aria" or any classical song with lyrics on it. The second movement of the song sometimes called "Air on the G String" because when it transposed to C major, the violin part who plays the main melody can be played on the G string alone.

7. Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, Op. 49



1812 Overture or The Year 1812, festival overture in E-flat major, Op. 49, is a song written by Tchaikovsky in 1880. Tchaikovsky wrote this song to commemorate Russia's defense of its motherland against Napoleon's invading Grande Armée in 1812. Tchaikovsky finished this work just in six weeks. What makes the song interesting is, Tchaikovsky added 16 times cannons fire and church bells on its finale. But unfortunately, although this composition was a success, actually Tchaikovsky hated this composition.

8. Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream (Wedding March)


This is also one of the most popular songs in the world. Because people not only use this song for movies, but also in some events, especially wedding ceremonial. It composed by Mendelssohn at two separate times. The first in 1826, he wrote concert overture (Op. 21). Later in 1842, he wrote an incidental music (Op. 61) for William Shakespeare play production, which then he incorporated it with his concert overture.

9. Vivaldi's The Four Seasons



The Four Season is a group of four Vivaldi's Concertos. Each concerto gives a musical expression to a season in a year. These too, are some of Vivaldi's best works. They were written in about 1723 and published in 1725. The music was unusual at that time because Vivaldi performs them with accompanying poems that elucidated what it was about those seasons that his music was intended to evoke. It provides one of the earliest and most detailed examples of what was later called program music—music with a narrative element.

10. Brahms's Wiegenlied: Guten Abend, gut Nacht, Op. 49, No. 4


This song is usually used for child lullaby, especially to makes baby sleep. It was published in 1868 and widely known as Brahms's Lullaby. The song was dedicated to Brahms' friend, Bertha Faber, on the occasion of the birth of her second son. Brahms had been in love with her in her youth and constructed the melody of the Wiegenlied to suggest, as a hidden counter-melody, a song she used to sing to him.
